Basement People vs. Balcony People

We all have people in our lives who inspire us or bring us down. I call people from the basement to those who take us down and people from the balcony to those who pick us up.

The people on the balcony triumph in your achievements, they are your cheerleaders, the ones who will encourage you and take you to new heights. These are the people I choose to surround myself with. You can identify them pretty quickly – get close to a person multiple times and you should have them linked by their conversation. People on the balcony will find something positive even in the not so good situations: they will see the light even in the dark.

Then there are the basement people – these are the ones who will complain, they can’t see the good in anything and seem to want to bring you down with them. They will find reasons to complain and they will find everything wrong with a situation. They exude negativity and will not be happy until they transfer their negative ideas and energy to someone else. Simply put, they will wear you down and you will feel exhausted after leaving their presence. Sometimes you will even feel as if something hit you. They are the joy hunters.

The good news is that we have the choice to be around these types of people or not. So ask yourself, do I want to be surrounded by people from the balcony and have them lift me up or do I want to be surrounded by people from the basement and go down into the dark abyss of negativity with them? Now ask yourself what kind of person am I? Am I a balcony person, singing, dancing on the platform of life or am I a basement person knocking others down and stealing their joy and more importantly their own? It’s time to go out dancing to sing our songs of joy!

May today’s possibilities excite us!
