Holidays – Top 10 things to do in Zurich

Zurich is not only beautiful and full of culture, but it is also one of the safest cities in the world. It’s a shame it’s not one of the cheapest! Still, you don’t need to break the bank if Zurich is your vacation destination – here’s a mix of the top ten popular attractions and lesser-known treasures to immerse you in the Swiss spirit!

1) Go to church: Some of Zurich’s most beautiful attractions are its churches. The first three are Grossmuenster, Fraumunster and St Peter. For history buffs, Grossmünster was where the great reformer, Zwingli, was a pastor. Fraumünster is famous for its incredible stained glass windows by Marc Chagall, and St. Peter’s boasts the world’s largest church clock.

2) Get artsy: Even if you’re not a huge fan of art, the Kunsthaus Zürich is definitely worth a visit. It has one of the world’s largest collections of classic modern art, including words by Munch, Picasso, Braque and Giacometti.

3) Go window shopping: in the Bahnhof Strasse. This street is one of the most exclusive and expensive in Zürich, so perhaps you will use your imagination more than your wallet. Beautiful architecture and sights like the Rennweg and Paradeplatz along the way make Bahnhof Strasse a great place.

4) Lindenhof: Offering one of the best views of the Limmat and Zurich’s east side, the Lindenhof is a green oasis in the old historic district and a popular tourist destination. But that doesn’t stop the locals from coming here with a bottle of champagne and some plastic glasses and waiting for the sun to set and cast a magical glow over the city…

5) Rote Fabrik: One of Zurich’s biggest cultural centers, the Rote Fabrik (Red Factory) is a hub for concerts, parties, and festivals. Much of the music is ‘indie’ or unconventional, and there is also a theatre, bar and restaurant. Also, it’s located right near the lake… which is nice.

6) Go Swiss: at the Johanniter Brasserie. A favorite among the locals, this restaurant is renowned for its seasonal produce and generous portions. Serving traditional Swiss meals, this is one you won’t want to miss.

7) Get your feet wet: at the Barfussbar (barefoot bar!), Frauenbad. A perfect place for summer evenings, order a drink, kick off your shoes and enjoy the view over the river and the city while you dip your toes in the water. Heavenly!

8) Drink in some culture: The Maiers Theater is outside the center of Zurich and is famous for its varied program: comedy, cabaret, plays, bands, solo artists, dance performances, choirs, etc., along with theaters of improvisation and singing performance! If you need a strong drink after all that, good news, because there is also a bar!

9) See what you can see: Zurich See is a stunning lake, framed by forests and mountains. Easily accessible from the city, why not just take a walk through this fantastic landscape?

10) And finally: end your trip with a relaxing visit to the Balthazar Café and get acquainted with the delights of the famous Swiss apple strudel (don’t skimp on the sauce!) and hot chocolate. A delicious farewell!
