Reflection of Muslims on Social Media: Is Facebook Haram?

In today’s modern world, social media is very powerful and has an inspiring influence on the way we communicate and connect, and because it has deeply impacted our society, Muslims began to wonder whether to use some of their Apps like Facebook is haram (forbidden). , mainly due to the way our brothers and sisters use it commonly today. So is Facebook haram?

Well, the counter question is how do you use Facebook? In Islam, the concepts of halal (lawful acts) and haram (illegal acts) are very clear. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “What is Halal is clear and what is Haram is clear, and between the two there are ambiguous issues (mutashabihat) that many people do not know. Who avoids ambiguous matters clarifies himself regarding his religion and honor, but whoever falls into ambiguous matters (eventually) falls into what is Haram … Truly every king has a shrine, and truly the shrine of Allah are Its prohibitions.

So the haram is clear, and Muslim “Facebookers” need to think deeply and ask themselves: What kinds of activities do they do on Facebook? Do you spend most of your time on Facebook looking at “hot” photos of your friends or just reading current news and events as they appear in your newsfeed? What is your heart telling you about your works? Do you feel that your actions from the latter are pure and halal or do you have some doubt from the other part of your mind telling you that your actions from the former are a bit stained with some haram filth? It is very easy for Muslims to take note, logically, of whether they are going the right way or the wrong way.

Once again, Muslims must ask themselves: why are they using Facebook. Does it matter to their lives here in Dunya (today’s world) or will you get any rewards for them later in Al-Aakhira (the afterlife)? Part of what makes a good Muslim is rationality: doing everything for the benefit of himself and his society.

Facebook has some benefits. Islamic verses, hadiths and resources can be easily updated on a Muslim’s page and lo and behold, millions of people can see it and, hey, who knows, a Christian or an unbeliever can learn some teachings of the religion. Islamic pages like Ayah of the Day, Hadith of the Day, and Jannah are some of the few pages that update Islamic resources on Facebook. In essence, please your heart with pure actions (halal) either on Facebook or Twitter, and avoid doing haram. Part of these bans include: uploading your “hot” photos and flirting with random friends. So as a Muslim, do you reflect on using Facebook? If so, then go with your conscience and give up: it is haram.
