The Professionals’ Top 5 Tips for Painting Kitchen Cabinets

The kitchen plays an important role in keeping our families healthy. The kitchen is considered an important space in our homes. Keeping your kitchen clean and fresh is the key to a happy and healthy family. And while we talk about kitchens, let’s talk about their best feature, the cabinets. Cabinets define the look of your kitchen.

If you have a cabinet that is worn out and you want to replace it, installing a new one could be an expensive option for you. Rather, you can remake the cabinets to make them as good as new. A simple paint job can change the entire look of your kitchen and also complement the decor. Here are some tips from professionals for painting kitchen cabinets.

Step 1: Remove all doors, shelves, drawers, and base hardware and wall cabinets. Clean the surface with a soft, clean cloth and mineral spirits. You can also use trisodium phosphate. Removes all oil stains, grime, waxes, and other stains. Your paint will not work well on dirty and greasy surfaces.

Step 2: Open finished surfaces and even lightly sanding. If you have dents or grooves on the surface of your cabinet, use a good wood putty to fill them in first. After sanding, wipe off the sanding dust with a clean cloth.

Step 3: Choose a primer that suits your surface type (metal, laminate, or wood). Have the primer tinted to match the top coat color, especially for the dark, stained surface. Apply the stain blocking primer designed for glossy surfaces. For tight grained woods such as cherry, maple synthetics, slow-drying oil-based primers work best. And thick layers of oil-based pudding for ash, mahogany, walnut, oak, and other open grained woods. Apply your primer with a good quality nylon brush. Don’t forget to caulk the open seams.

Step 4: After your primer dries completely, start painting your cabinets. Start with your doors, because one side needs to be dry before starting the other side. Apply at least two coats of paint. Allow the first coat to dry completely, then lightly sand the painted surface and apply a second coat again. Stir the paint well and pour it into a paint tray before painting.

Step 5: Once the paint is completely dry, put the doors, shelves and drawers back together. Remember the location of each door and shelves. Keep it organized.

Whether you want to remodel the entire kitchen or just paint the cabinets, try consulting with your family and discovering your preferred colors. Since the whole family spends time together in the kitchen more than in any other room, sharing decorating ideas will help you create a kitchen atmosphere that is loved by all.
