The sport of cricket: religion in India

Countless people, standing in long, orderly lines, and waiting for a single entrance pass to catch a glimpse of their favorite cricketer, all in front of them.

What is this?

This is love, dedication, charm and devotion that is difficult to express in words. And it will not be an exaggeration if you call a religion in India ‘cricket’.

On game day, expect roads to be empty, offices quiet, students skipping classes and most people glued to some digital scoring provider.

It doesn’t matter if you’re watching the live stream of the game on your digital device and an unknown person comes up to you and asks, “Dude, what’s the score?” Trust me, you tell him the score and you’re doing an act of kindness.

Such is the cricket fever in the Indians and it runs in their blood similar to any normal cell type of the vital fluid.

The cricket god:

If we consider this as a religion, we also have a deity whom we worship as The God. And this God is none other than our very noble and popular ‘Sachin Tendulkar’.

Known as the ‘little master’ and the ‘master blaster’, the cricket god is a living inspiration to countless aspiring enthusiasts almost all over the world.

If you ever walk up to an Indian boy holding a bat in his hand and ask him what he dreams of for his future, don’t be surprised if he tells you that one day he wants to become ‘Sachin Tendulkar’.

This little man is the uncrowned “king of hearts” of almost every single cricket-adoring Indian. And while God has withdrawn from all forms of this game, he continues to motivate others, not to become ‘Sachin Tendulkar’, but to earn a name for himself.

So this is again a proof of the value of this sport among the Indian fans.

India-Pakistan matches:

There are very unentertaining events in the world that could be compared to the entertainment, excitement, allure and fascination that a cricket match between India and its eternal rival Pakistan offers.

Both countries have a history of producing cricket legends and when these two nations battle to win a match, even a cricket fan will be drawn in. Each and every one of the balls, almost every over and every inning of this type of match is filled with innumerable emotions; the emotions we carry for this sport.

And at bottom, cricket could certainly be called as the lifeblood of Indians that tends to best engrave its roots in hearts.

India is a secular country with due respect to any and all religions. And among the popular ones, cricket also stands out, with a head that looks more to the sky.
