Backsplash Tile – 5 Tips

Tile backsplash can really set off a tile countertop project. Once the counter top is done, installing a backsplash comes naturally. However, there are many little details that can bite you right on top of that counter. Here are 5 tips to get the job done right.

Electrical outlets are shocking

Death lies in wait for the unconscious right at that electrical outlet on the counter. You may be able to avoid having to deal with electricity on most tile projects, but probably not in this area. Treat outlets as if they have power, as they might even if you think they are turned off.

Check local codes, but outlet boxes should generally be no more than 1/4 inch from the finished wall. Box extensions are available to bring the box to the correct location.

Cuts, cuts and more cuts

Behind the cabinet presents many opportunities to practice with a tile saw. This is because windows, doors, and corners often come into play along with that outlet. If you decide to extend the tile to the cabinets, you must also cut the tile at the intersection of the tile. Planning your cuts in advance can speed up the task.

a solid foundation

Mosaics can be laid on all kinds of materials and it is likely that whatever wall surface you have will work as a base for the mosaic. But the surface must be clean for the adhesive to stick. It must also be rigid so that flexing of the finished surface does not occur. Cement backer board installation is often the best surface for tile installation. But chances are that step can be skipped.

spacing notes

Space the tiles one grout width above the countertop tiles. This can be easily accomplished using tile spacers. This entire area is a perfect place to use tile spacers. This is because tile and grout are highly visible in this prominent location.

round nose solution

Round shingles work especially well if the shingles are only going one shingle high or any height below upper cabinets. Otherwise, regular country tiles can be used and then cut to fit the upper cabinets.

Backsplash construction adds a really practical finish to a tile countertop project. Of course, it also adds beauty as a really fine way to accent the entire tile countertop project. Like many smaller projects, laying tile in this area really slows down due to the large number of obstacles on the counter and the large amount of trimming work required to actually finish the job.
