Bamboo flooring – a popular choice

Bamboo flooring has seen a surge in popularity in recent years. This newfound popularity can be attributed to a couple of factors. The green movement in construction has been the most important factor. These floors are made from a renewable product, essentially this means that the floor does not have a huge impact on the environment because they grow very quickly and are very readily available. They are very durable and look great. Hardwood floors have generally made a big splash lately.

What is bamboo?

Bamboo is not actually a tree in the correct sense. It has roots and a trunk but not many branches or leaves. Many people are surprised to find out that bamboo is actually a grass and not a tree. This may explain why it is growing so fast and in many regions of the world. It has a much harder system than the trees. Bamboo can grow up to twenty-four inches in a day. This incredible herb can grow up to thirty-nine inches per season, which typically lasts about four months. It is the fastest growing plant known to man. It can be harvested ready to be transformed into wood in about three years when it reaches maturity. After about three years it will die naturally due to mold growth that weakens the stem. This plant is truly self-renewable and is harvested at the end of its life cycle, which means that using this material as flooring and to produce other materials has zero negative effect on the environment. This product is easily harvested and requires a simple leech process to remove all of the sugar sap. The bamboo is cut and the stems are braced against a support system for one to two weeks. When the leaves turn yellow after the two week period, it is an indication to the processor that the material is ready for processing.

What do they look like?

Natural bamboo flooring is a pale yellow to pale cream color. Many of these types of flooring are stained to reflect another tone on the floor, but natural bamboo is the most favored option. These floors are durable and can tolerate both heat and cold well, expanding and contracting naturally to indoor climate changes. They can be used in most any room in a house. They are moisture tolerant making them ideal for kitchens and bathrooms. Bamboo flooring is a great option for any home.
