The late great Patrick Swayze was a legend among leading men. Very few movie stars could make a cheesy romantic movie one year, then turn around and put out a cult classic action movie like Road House the next. Swayze’s appeal crossed the gender line and, as they say, the girls wanted him and the boys wanted to be him. How did he do it? Many theorize that it was Patrick Swayze’s mullet that did the trick.
Swayze first pioneered this edgy variation of the mullet in the Ghost era. On the surface, the mullet is comparable to Kurt Russel’s mullet as seen in movies like Escape from New York, but in reality, the two are very different. Russel’s shaggy mullet was only slightly longer in the back than in the front, suggesting an attitude that defined the Bad Dude image, but did him no favors as a womanizer, and as we all know, the mullet it should be used primarily to identify one as a ladies’ man.
Swayze’s mullet was so much braver, so much bolder, and perhaps the best mullet Hollywood has ever seen.
What made that mullet so special? Well, just look at it. In the front we have the Duck Butt style made famous by Elvis Presley, but in the back we have a gorgeous mane of blonde locks that are both shaggy and well-maintained.
The trick may have been in the conditioner you used, allowing the hair to be shaggy but not fluffy, shiny but not too shiny. Most likely, it’s some secret that Swayze took to his grave, a secret that he wasn’t destined to fall into the wrong hands. Certainly, if ANYONE could pull off that look, the process of natural selection would go completely out of whack, and any old bum could seduce any woman he wants.
Some of the world’s foremost mullet researchers have tried in vain to recreate this look to perfection only to come up with near misses and a far cry from reality.
Our advice? Experiment with different shampoos, tease the front a bit, and if you manage to get the perfect look, keep the secret with your life and remember that with great power comes great responsibility.
