Photoshop Text: 5 Must-Have Techniques

1 – Create a text layer

To create a standard text layer, the user must click on the image with the text tool selected. Photoshop will place all of the type on its own unique layer. To edit the text the user must perform two tasks. First, select the appropriate text layer; second, the user must select the text tool. The type can now be edited.

2 – Point Text and Area Text

This technique is where the user will click on the screen and start typing. Dotted text does not support automatic text wrapping. The type will simply continue off the screen if the user continues typing. Area text consists of text within a frame that supports text wrap. To create this frame, draw a box with the type tool and type inside the box and start typing, when you reach the edge of the box the type will continue on the next line.

3 – Text inside a custom shape

This is also known as a clipping path where the text will show through an object. This technique is achieved by placing an image over the text layer, right clicking on the image and choosing ‘create clipping mask’. The image can now be moved while the text will remain in the same location. To select the text, the user must disable the ‘auto select layer’ in the layers palette. Then select the text directly and move it around the Stage. This will move the text but not the image.

4 – Text on a Path

The process of orienting text to a vector path. The path can then be edited using the path selection and direct selection tools. The text will adhere to all the normal vector text formatting attributes.

5 – Text style

This technique can be applied to text using layer styles. To apply the selection to the text layer, choose FX at the bottom of the Layers palette and select the appropriate style, such as Drop Shadow. The effect can be copied to other text layers by Alt-clicking the effect and dragging it to a new layer. The effect can also be recorded in the layer styles palette.

To quickly preview the font assigned to an object, we can select the appropriate word, select the fonts in the font family section of the type options bar, and use the up and down arrow keys to toggle among the available sources. This will provide a real-time preview of the font assigned to the word. To release the text tool, select CMD/CTRL Enter.
