With Nintendo’s highly anticipated 3DS system due to launch in March, what’s in store for all you Nintendo 2D lovers out there? What are the top ten DS games for this year? We hope this article helps highlight the best DS games that all 2D console lovers can look forward to in 2011.
1. Plants vs. Zombies: If you love tower defense games, you’re in luck as PopCap’s Plants vs Zombies games are headed to the DS platform. The game consists of preventing zombies from entering your house and eating your brain. Players have a number of weapons at their disposal to stop the zombie attack, such as the Venus Zombie Trap, which will swallow the enemy in one bite. However, there seem to be issues with the controls not working properly. Plants vs Zombies was released on January 18, 2011.
2. Pokemon Black/White– is the upcoming sequel in the Pokémon game series that introduces a new generation of Pokémon creatures and gameplay in a whole new location. One of the many improvements in this game is in the quality of the graphics. This video game is exclusive to the Nintendo DS platform and will be released at a later date to be confirmed this year. This role-playing adventure video game is being developed for Nintendo DS.
3. Ghost Trick: Ghost Detective: is an adventure/puzzle game developed by Capcom and released in Europe on January 14, 2011. Players take control of a spirit named Sissel, the spirit of a recently murdered victim who has special powers called “Ghost Tricks”. Upon coming into contact with a dead victim, players can use this special ability to alter the outcome of a past event.
4. Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation: is a role-playing game that makes its first appearance on the DS handheld console. The game is an iteration of the Dragon Quest series and is developed by ArtePiazza. Players recruit characters as they travel on their adventure between the “real” and “dream” worlds in the worlds of evil. The game will make its first appearance outside of Japan. A date for its release in Europe has not yet been announced.
5. Kingdom Hearts Re:coded: It is a new version of the Kingdom Hearts coded title that was released only for Japan. This action RPG was developed by Square Enix and sets events after the game, Kingdom Heart II reminds us of the past to give us a glimpse of the future. The game centers on Jiminy Cricket, who discovers a strange entry in his diary that is used to document his affair with Sora. To solve this mystery, King Mickey (one of the many Disney characters in this game) sends a digital version of Sora into the books. The game was released in Europe on January 14, 2011.
6. LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: This action-adventure video game is being developed by TT Games. The game will feature characters and stories from all three existing Pirates movies, including scenes from the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie. LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean has more than 20 levels and can be played in both single and multiplayer modes. The game is scheduled to be released in May 2011 to coincide with the release of the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
7.Captain America: Super Soldier: is an action-adventure game set in the World War II era. Players play the role of Captain America and face off against his archenemies like the Red Skull and Hydra. Players will be able to eliminate multiple enemies using shield actions, deflect missiles, among many others. Captain America is being written by screenwriter and comedian Christos Gage, who has worked on many Marvel books including Spider-Man. The game will go on sale in the third quarter of 2011.
8. Okamide: is a sequel to the title Okami released on the PlayStation 2 and Wii consoles. The game also known as Okamiden: Chiisaki Taiyo is being developed by Capcom. The game focuses on the events that occurred nine months after Okami and features the children of the previous characters. The game is available in single player mode and is scheduled to be released on March 18, 2011.
9.Kirby DS: Not much is known about this title, however, recent trailers for the game show that it is a game worth waiting for. The game features 10 Kirbys to start with and you, the player, must guide your Kirbys in the “right” direction. You may be able to sacrifice some of your Kirbys to overcome certain obstacles.
10. Radiant Story: is a role playing game developed by Atlus. Players assume the role of Stocke, an intelligence agent who was injured after successfully rescuing a colleague captured by the Granorg government. Stocke finds himself in Historia, a world where mysterious children grant him the power to travel through time and space. No release date has been set for Radiant Historia in Europe.
These are my top ten DS games for 2011. Even with the release of Nintendo’s 3DS, all 2D lovers need not worry as there is still a good list of DS titles to look forward to in 2011.
