Don’t let an ant infestation ruin your summer

Ants are one of the most common types of summer pests. Two common species found in Britain are the garden ant and the pharaoh ant.

Garden ants are around 3-4mm long and are often referred to as flying ants as they produce wings during the summer to allow them to mate. The pharaoh ant, on the other hand, is much smaller, only 2mm long, and yellowish-brown in color. These ants are often found indoors, as they originate in much warmer climates. Like most ants, the pharaoh ant needs water to survive, which is why they are often found near kitchens and bathrooms. They also pose a health risk as they transmit pathogenic organisms by feeding in unsanitary areas such as drains, garbage cans, and wound dressings.

It may not seem like a major problem if you see a lone ant roaming your countertop, however, in a matter of days, you could have an entire ant colony setting up camp in your home to breed and feed on food scraps. You can reduce the chances of an ant infestation by keeping your home completely clean at all times, taking our trash regularly, and storing all food in airtight containers. Due to their small size, ants generally have no problem entering any home, however making sure all doors and windows are sealed with weatherstripping or putting salt, mint, or chilli around cracks can deter ants from get in.

There are many different forms of ant control products on the market. Ant bait traps are often the most popular, however you should make sure you have a serious ant problem before using them as they can attract more ants into the home. Although sprays, powders, and bait traps can be a helpful short-term remedy, they often don’t eliminate the anthill, meaning you’ll soon have another batch of ants crawling across your kitchen floor.

Ants are very unsanitary. Babies and young children are at high risk for infections from these pests, as their immune systems are not fully developed. They can also be a real hassle and ruin summer garden parties and barbecues (if one of your guests sees an ant crawling across the table it can be very embarrassing).

Make sure your home is happy and healthy this summer and contact a high-quality pest control company for expert advice and help.
