Usnea: the powerful lichen for your health

You may have heard of the Usnea herb recently. It’s not something we usually hear about a lot, but lately it’s been getting a bit more attention. Usnea is a powerful and versatile herb that has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties and can be used both orally and topically. Taken orally, this herb can be used to cure lung diseases such as bronchitis, wet or dry cough, or other upper respiratory tract problems. Topically, it can be used to cure a wide variety of infections.

Also known as old man’s beard, beard lichen, or tree moss, Usnea grows in tiny, hair-like tufts, with green algae covering the white string like a fungus. This lichen grows all over the world, but it thrives particularly in humid climates like the Pacific Northwest and can be found on the bark of many trees in the forests of the southeastern United States. It is a grayish-green covering on tree bark and is one of the mildest yet strongest immune tonics in the herbal world.

Usnea is a form of lichen, which is a combination of an algae and a fungus that grow together in a symbiotic union. The fungus belongs to the Ascomycota division, while the alga is a member of the Chlorophyta division. It is classified as an antibiotic and aromatic herb, containing lichenic acids, such as barbaric and lobaric acids. This combination is the reason why Usnea is able to inhibit something as strong as the tuberculosis bacillus.

Traditionally, Usnea has been used for a number of ailments including headaches, eye irritation, malaria, scorfula, leucorrhoea, bleeding, anthrax, and toxic snakebite. As an immune system herb, it can be used to help cure respiratory and sinus infections, pneumonia, profuse phlegm, strep throat, colds, flu, as well as urinary tract, kidney, and bladder infections. This can be helpful for people with chronic fatigue syndrome, HIV, herpes, and other chronic conditions related to depressed immune systems. It is beneficial for women with candidiasis, trichomonosa, bacterial vaginosis, and chlamydia, and is used to treat other fungal infections such as athlete’s foot and infected wounds.

In acute situations, as well as for long-term immune enhancement, Usnea has been used to promote a faster healing process. This humble yet powerful plant can be your best friend during cold and flu season, or any other time your immune system needs an extra boost. It has no known oral side effects, but may cause an allergic reaction on sensitive skin when applied topically, and is safe for children and animals. The most common and best form of Usnea is in the form of a tincture. As mentioned above, because this herb can be used both topically and orally, it is applied differently with each application.

To use topically, mix one part Usnea with five parts heavy cream or jelly to make an antibacterial cream. Because some people may experience an allergic reaction when applied topically, always try to apply the topical mixture to a small patch of the affected area the first time, and make sure your skin is not sensitive to the properties of this herb.

For use orally, the normal dosage as a tincture is 6-12 drops in juice or water, or directly under the tongue, as desired, and can be taken up to 3 times daily. You should store the dyes in a cool, dark place. Always keep them out of the reach of children and always follow the standard guidelines for correct dosages for children and animals, based on size and age.

Now go. And experience the incredible healing powers of this simple lichen.
