Things you probably don’t know and forget about Google Adsense

“AdSense Earning = Impression Count x Click Rate x Cost Per Click x Smart Pricing Factor. Viewing your website will not ban you. Just make sure you don’t click on the ads.

However, repeatedly reloading your page to increase page impressions can get you blocked. Click-through rate (CTR) is the ratio of clicks to impressions. It can range between 0.1% and 30%, but the most common is between 1% and 10%.

First impressions count– Make sure the ad unit with the highest CTR is the first ad unit in your page’s HTML code. Please note that the first ad unit in the source code is not always the first ad unit your users will see when the page finishes loading in their browser.

Ads placed near rich content and navigation aids generally work well. because users focus on those areas of a page. On pages where users are typically focused on reading an article, ads placed directly below the bottom of the editorial content tend to work very well.”

Format is important for various ad unitsdisplay your ad units where regular users will notice them, place a leaderboard immediately after the last post.”

Center placement, above the fold, works best. Best performing ad format is the big rectangle, 336×280. So the larger ad formats are performing better than the others, and the reason is that they actually take up fewer lines. And so, with each additional line, you stand a chance of losing that interested user.

So the wider formats work better, so specifically, the top three formats are the 336×280 that you see on the page; the medium rectangle of 300×250; and then the 160×600 wide skyscraper.

We have a feature in the AdSense account where you can select multiple different color palettes that blend with your site to add some variety and freshness to your ads. And that will also help reduce ad blindness.”

“The second most active location in terms of clicks tends to be the right bar or margin.” “Skyscrapers” and vertical banners work well when placed alongside content in the main body.. Square and rectangular ads placed within the center column also work well, as long as they are placed in context with the content. Ads placed below the fold tend to perform less well, although that’s not a hard and fast rule.”

“I’ve found the most success by placing the Google AdSense medium rectangle, either right in the middle of the page or in a middle column to the right, as long as you have content above and below the ad unit. It’s okay to use AdSense ads in a forum, however, expect a very low CTR.”

“Put AdSense ads on text-rich pages, avoid titles like ‘Sponsored Links’ and approved ‘Ads’, place ads above the middle of the pageMatch the colors of your ads to your site’s color scheme, Match ads to your page: remove borders by having a color similar to your background.”

“To remove public service announcements (PSAs) in Google AdSense, develop enough good content with keywords, make sure META tags like ‘title’ and ‘description’ and heading tags like h1, h2, etc. have content that matches the rest of your site.”

“You can now run AdSense on the same page as other contextual ad programs.” (January 2007)

“Google AdSense Policy: We ask publishers not to align images and ads in a way that suggests a relationship between the images and the ads.”

“Section targeting uses certain html settings to force the Google AdSense bot to focus on specific content. Section targeting is the latest and most powerful addition to AdSense.”

“Over the weekend, I decided to change the number of ad units on my blog based on where my traffic is coming from. I have a small PHP function that checks if the referrer is a search engine and if it is I show 2 additional ad units. My AdSense revenue increased by 284% on Saturday, Sunday and Monday!”

Never click on your own AdSense ads or click on them for any reason. Never change the AdSense code. Don’t run competitive contextual text ads (2006) or search services on the same site. Don’t mask ad elements. Avoid excessive advertising and keyword stuffing.

“Putting ads on your site won’t hurt your traffic. There are 6 types of blogger income: Google Adsense, Donations (eg PayPal), Text Link Ads (sold for a fixed amount per month), Chitika eMiniMalls Ads (Pay Per Click), Affiliate Programs such as Amazon, advertising sold to individual advertisers (campaigns of three months or more)

“Several factors come into play when AdSense tries to determine what the page is about: the URL of the page, the title of the page, the anchor text of the links, the keywords that appear most frequently within the page, search engine queries that lead to the page or to another page that links to the page”.

“Ask yourself if you’re willing to compromise your blog’s design and overall look by adding ads to it. Look at your traffic and see if it’s enough to draw the crowd. Make good use of advertising channels. Give it time.”

You can put up to 3 AdSense units on a page. For short articles, the CTR is better when the ads are placed right above the content. For long articles, the CTR improves if the ads are placed somewhere in the middle of the content. Go Wide: the big rectangle 336×280 is the highest paying AdSense format.”
